| Captains & Field Captains - Selection and General Overview Overview The selection of a player to be a captain should be considered an honor and a compliment to the player, whether he is asked to captain A Side or B Side. At times, it may be necessary or prudent to have an A Side player fill the role of captain for the B Side to help motivate and develop the players. Captains The selection of captains was conducted by the coaches at the beginning of the season after looking at the team and evaluating the leadership potential of the players, the experience on the rugby field, the dedication to the team, and the class breakdown of the team. They are meant to be leaders both on and off the field, and set the example of how a Prep Rugby Player should develop into a fine young man. The mid-season selection of a captain is made when a player impresses upon his coaches, his fellow players and the fans his dedication to the team. This is specifically evidenced through his practice attendance and performance, his positive and motivational attitude during games and practice, and his sense of good sportsmanship. He, too, is expected to be a leader both on and off the field. Should a captain not perform to a satisfactory level in his role as captain, the coaches have the right to take away his captainship. A mid-season captain is not a guaranteed position every year. The roles and responsibilities of the captains will be discussed among the captains and the coaches. Field Captains On a rugby pitch, each team has one player who may speak to the ref. No other player may speak to the ref. The field captain will be selected by the coaches and is expected to conduct a respectful dialogue with the ref, using appropriate terms of address (i.e. "sir" or "ma'am", depending). Field captains' specific roles are limited to match play, but they should recognize the importance on the role as seen by the coaches and understand that they, too, should be leaders on and off the field. A Side and B Side field captains may be, but are not exclusive to, the team captains. |
