For the first three years of the team, every coach was an alumnus of St. Joe's Prep, stretching over a number of years. Even one of our newer coaches comes to us via his brother, class of 2008.
All coaches are volunteers, and all have played rugby for several years, either at the college level, men's team level or higher.
Coach Farren started his rugby career in college at Georgetown. While studying overseas, he played a little rugby in Chile, and was a member of the Cairo Rugby Club in Egypt. As a volunteer in Oregon, he played a season for the Bend Rough Riders RFC. Upon returning to the Philadelphia area after 1999, Coach Farren played for Blackthorn Men RFC for a couple seasons before an injury sidelined his playing days.
Coach Farren helped found Prep Rugby in 2005.
Coach McCloskey took Connecticut by storm in the early 1990's, and put his energy to use for the Fairfield University Men's Rugby team. Diving into play - literally and figuratively - Coach McCloskey was a leading scrum-half for the team, earning a spot on the All-Star team as a senior.
Creative and energetic, he keeps the players motivated and enthused.

Coach Gregory likes to say he taught Genghis Khan how to play rugby, but the reality is he honed his skills at Villanova in the recent past. From there he played in the Philadelphia area for several years as a hooker, earning invitations to various USA Rugby events and making his mark on the scene.
Coach Gregory loves nothing more than to scrum down over and again until the pack is ready to drive.
Coach Gregory helped found Prep Rugby in 2005. Coach Gregory recently took over as Head Coach of The University of Scranton Men's Team but will still be coming out to help out his first (true) rugby love!

Coach Miller comes courtesy of Penn State University, where he was a stand out player and had national attention on his ability and skills on the pitch.
He brings a hands-on approach to current techniques and strategies that help deepen players' ability to analyze and react and thus perform at their best.

Coach Dugan played football at the Prep and is currently the chairman of the Prep Football Alumni Association but his passion is rugby. After graduating the Prep in 1978, he started playing rugby and played for 20 years missing only one season due to injury. He played on several teams in his career - Light Horse RFC, Doylestown RFC and Second City Troop RFC. Originally an Outside Center, he soon was moved in to play Flyhalf where he spent the majority of his years as a player.
Retiring in 1998 from active play, he has since been certified as a Rugby referee and learned of the Prep’s rugby team when he was assigned to referee one of their games in the Prep’s first season. He currently enjoys coaching new players and teaching them the greatest game they will ever play.
In addition to coaching the backs, he also coaches his three children in soccer, basketball, baseball and whatever else they can get involved in … and someday vows to inform his wife that he is secretly coaching Prep Rugby.
